Plagiarism

There are a lot of ways to define it... Here is one "copying someone else's work and pretending that you wrote it."

-find more definitions here

Student - A rule of thumb for you.  As easy as it is for you to copy and paste content from the internet.  It is just as easy for teachers to copy and paster YOUR text to see if it is original.

Granite District also uses "Turn It In" inside of Canvas.  Please use it for student learning and tracking.  Teachers - When creating the assignment check the box that says "use Turn It In".

There are two sides to plagiarism.

  1. Students plagiarize by copying text and pasting it into "their" work.
    • They are deliberately cheating and do not want to do their own work as a teacher has assigned.
    • Or, they do not know how to "copy correctly" by citing their sources or how much of another's work they can use.
  2. Teachers.
    • Can check and see if a students work is their own by copying and pasting text into some of the "checker links" below.
    • Should not accept plagiarized work and teach students how to NOT plagiarize.
    • Don't forget Google! Paste a paragraph of student work into Google and see what it finds.

Whose job is it to catch and teach this topic? Any teacher who assigns any type of writing assignment!
Please be advised that teachers are not trying to "Catch Students cheating" we are here to teach students how to write and think for themselves!
