What is Goodreads.com? Here is their answer! Think of it as Facebook for books. However do not think of it as only a place for book lovers as the name implies. Think of it as a place to find interesting <book> things instead. Including Quizzes, Quotes, Clubs, Groups, Bookstores, Libraries, Authors...

If you get (any or too many) e-mails from your "friends". Log in and go to your profile click the "E-mail" tab and make your selections. To get to your profile... Log in. Click the dropdown at the top right near your name and chose "Edit Profile". Check out the "Tabs" and change what you want.

In Class
  • Create a group (LINK) and have students join your group. You can make it private for YOUR students only otherwise it will be public and anyone can join. Add required reading, suggested reading, extra credit... (Should we get an Olympus High group?)
  • Have student write reviews here. You can add comments and others can see them too. (Unless they are in a private group).
  • Take Quizzes in class for fun or credit. Quizzes are user made and may not be the exact questions you want. You can make your own or have students make them.
  • Set a reading Goal
  • Widgets to put on YOUR website. (RSS feeds) Under Profile click the "Widgets" tab. See "My Quotes" below. (Refresh this page and the quote will change.) There are many other widgets.

In Life. (Yours and your students)
  • Gain an understanding of what others are reading
  • Compare what you are reading to your friends.
  • Find books you may want to read
  • Facebook (and other Social Media) Link/App

Pros
  • Web based review and comments
  • Yes, there is an app for that!
  • Local Groups (Olympus High School, Riverton , Do your own search and there is pretty much any Genre you can think of...
  • Collaboration
  • Listopia. find books by ...lists.
  • Makes books fun
  • You don't actually have to read any books (if you don't want to) but it is still fun to explore.
  • Link to your local branch of the public library. You have to be logged in. Go to "My Account" and the "Book Links" tab.

Cons
  • Students can copy other students reviews. BUT they can do that ANYWHERE anyway!
  • You may learn about your friends by "judging" what books they read!
  • You will spend even more time on the web as this site can get pretty addicting as you find more and more things it can do.

Similar sites

  • I am sure there are more.
