As a culture we are so cheap with apps. Who wants to spend .99 when another (similar) app is free but has ads? We say this as we drink our 4.00 coffee! Many apps ARE worth the small price though but even with that said there are ways to get those pricey apps for free! As of this writing I have 379 apps.... that need updating! I have know idea how many apps I actually have. Keep in mind that I review and test a lot of apps before I send them to our 140+ iPads at my school or recommend an app to someone. I don't even want many of the apps anymore but apple seems to say tough, you downloaded it once... it is on "your permanent record." So, point is - try some of these links for free apps and finding apps. Yes, some are web pages and some are apps... to find other apps! I use some apps regularly and others I pull up randomly but that may be another posting. I would like to say that they're all pretty similar. I have been quite happy using only appgratis. Even tho as of this date there is no app in iTunes anymore! But you can get the e-mail a day from the website. Lastly... Keep in mind there is much more than what I have posted here. Use what you like! |

A few people asked me if we have a scanner here at school If you think about it all is scanner really does is take a picture of something. Most people just scan a picture or a document and save it as a .PDF or .jpg file. Granted it is pretty good resolution or quality - depending on your settings and cleanliness of the glass. This photo or document gets saved to the computer for uploading or otherwise sharing or saving digitally.
There. I just saved saved you more than $100.00.
HUH? That all being said... I disagree with some of it!
Saw this the other day and thought it was funny. Currently we have to use IE 8 to work with dDiscovery and Grade book. Version 8 is not an "updated browser" and most decent/secure websites will ask you to update your current version of IE please don't do it. If you do update you may not have all the same "functions" as you used to.
Many people have told me they did NOT update Gradebook. (IE). I just have to say... "okay". But... you did! You clicked on an "update my browser" link somewhere such as google or amazon... It would not update on it's own. GSD is not pushing out the new version (yet). So how did it update? Some one else did it - Oh, while logged in on your computer username? Come 'on own up to it! Please just use IE for Gradebook. Use Firefox for everything else and update it all want. Yes, you may download Chrome or Safari if you'd like but GSD offers no support for other browsers. Of course this all being said... I keep getting messages/e-mails that "they" (GSD) ARE going to be updating our IE to version 10 in January! But they have been saying that for about 2 months. We'll see what happens. WDIU? (What do I use?) Firefox. (You may know it as Mozilla) Thank you Monica for inviting me. It is always good to feel part of the team, to help and see how much teachers ARE using cool, fun, and real life technology. For those at the portfolio day today, Monday, here are my 2 or 3 cents.... Overall, it was great. Portfolios are a fantastic reflection tool. I did them in my science classroom for years. However it was on paper at the time and the students treated them more like scapbooks - I even showed the students mine. My portfolio consisted of the stuff my mom saved from my grade school years... mostly priceless artwork. Yes, I am serious. I also showed them my adult one which consists of boring pieces of paper that proves I went to some workshops and trainings. Portfolios are something students WILL look back on eventually. We know it may not seem important right now. SLCC (aka "Slick") requires portfolios for their classes, some of which are taught here at our school. Students are given 3 places to complete their portfolios - Weebly, Google Page, or Wordpress. All are free and all "sync" somehow with whatever SLCC uses with their Grading system. Of the 3, I would say that Weebly is the easiest and the "prettiest". Are there drawbacks to any of these sites? Of course. Will you not like something about it? Absolutely. Is one better than another? Yes, for somethings. Get over it all and use what is available at the chosen site! :)
Creating an Account... anywhere. She suggested that you create an account there by using your "home" or "personal" e-mail account. I highly disagree with her on this. Simply because of the purpose! If you are going to use it for school/work... Create it with your work e-mail! Simple rule of thumb. She has a point that if you ever leave Granite you will loose that e-mail address. Well you may not always have your gmail account either. Besides if you leave Granite <GASP> and/or teacher... you don't need this site anymore then either. HOWEVER for students YES, they need to use their own personal e-mail account. If they do not have one... they should get one. Most kids do already - especially if they are in a 1010 class. Please see my other page about passwords and usernames. What can I do for you? I do technology. I use weebly. I am a teacher. I can show your students how to create their sites. You do your <insert core content> and I will do the tech part. Let me know ahead of time when you want do this and I will be on it! She showed us two websites and I saw most of you write them down. I put the links on the shared drive for you S:From_Keith/Portfolios and I will post them here soon. Weebly has been around for quite a while but I have not used it too much yet. I've been dabbling in it for a while and have gotten quite fond of it. I am also a bit frustrated with wikispaces because it does not look good on an iPad.
So I am in the process of moving everything from our wikispace website over to this Weebly website which also includes a blog and some other features that should be more fun and and nicer looking on all devices. For now this is just from my library website not the whole school side but there is a new School website at WordPress you'll find that link on the school website. Or here - http://schools.graniteschools.org/olympushigh/. As with all sites it has its Pros and Cons.. |
